Feeding Alpha Hive/Wrong Recipe

September 21st, 2012 · No Comments

So I put two more containers into Alpha Hive last night. That makes six. It’s a solution of 1 part sugar to 1 part water. Reading around today I should be using 2 parts sugar to 1 part water.

Sugar is sugar right? Well, not really but in this example, yes. The bees pick up the sugar water and stow it in the cells then have to work out the water until a certain point. This is easy in the summer and spring but with cooler weather approaching it’s harder for them. They have to work off more water so the answer will be to feed them sugarier water from now on.

Oh, well. Lesson learned.
