Discretionary Spending Caused My Marriage

July 20th, 2009 · No Comments

Mattel is listed in this story as one of the companies hit hard by the recession.  Apparently, “consumers are cutting back on toys and other frivolous purchases”.

This is presented as another horror and shock moment basically stating that consumers are helping to deepen the recession by not spending on the “frivolous”.

Another “bad” behavior of consumers is that they are hording their money in bank accounts.

Wasn’t the consumer being chided during the good times for rampant consumerism and insufficiently saving?  We consumers can never win.

Oh, how does this all relate to my marriage.  Alicia and I met during a summer job working the tech-help lines at PowerWheels, a company now owned by Mattel.  To think, it all became with frivolous consumerism.
